Sunday, June 04, 2006

by the way you people out there with mighty appetites (god bless your stomachs), here's a little post dedicated to... CAKES.
to start off this highly droolworthy topic, i shall talk about the history of cakes and cake-making throughout the ages.

(taken from http://whatscookingamerica.net/History/CakeHistory.htm )
The most primitive homo sapiens in the world began making cakes not long after they discovered flour. The earliest examples were found among the remains of Neolithic villages where archaeologists discovered simple cakes made from crushed grains, moistened, compacted and probably cooked on a hot stone. Today's version of this early cake would be oatcakes, though now we think of them more as a biscuit or cookie.

(from http://www.foodtimeline.org/foodcakes.html )
According to the food historians, the precursors of modern cakes (round ones with icing) were first baked in Europe sometime in the mid-17th century. This is due to primarily to advances in technology (more reliable ovens, manufacture/availability of food molds) and ingredient availability (refined sugar).

well then, cakes were not only existent in ancient history (imagine a caveman baking, dinosaurs eating pandan cake?!) they actually had symbolic meaning!

(from http://www.foodtimeline.org/foodcakes.html )
People have consumed cakes of all kinds throughout history and at all sorts of ceremonial occasions. In today's world, people traditionally serve cakes at holidays, birthdays, weddings, funerals, and baptisms--in short, at all significant times in the cycle of life. The tradition of eating cake on ceremonial occaisions has its basis in ancient ritual. Cakes, in the ancient world, had ties with the annual cycle, and people used them as offerings to the gods and spirits who exercised their powers at particular times of the year.

so wrapping up my short lecture which does the astounding history and evolution of the almighty Cake no justice, here are some pictures that you should print out and blow up to life-size for good measure.

Innovative cake designs:

ahhh rrrright, dammit, i cant load the pictures in. maybe another time then. tata.
bless your chops!

omg, i'm actually one of the regular peeps who post here... lol. hmmm, got nth to say really, just came online, don't feel like sleeping, nothing to do, u know.

life's unfair. gravity is a myth, the earth sucks. but what the hell, you have to live with it until your expiry date. dammit. wonder where you go after life on earth...

do you check-in to that enigmatic wonderful destination called Heaven? what's it like to you? clear blue skies, endless grassy plains, rolling hills...?

or do you simply, vanish out of existence? as if u were never here in the first place, all that's left is a faint memory and a death record.

which raises questions about what life actually is. maybe it's just an interval, a transit stage. makes me shudder to think that we might be controlled by other-worldly powers, a higher authority out there. like in a chess game, we're just chess pieces moved around, a simple game to some, gods or however you wanna term them.

all this pondering makes me hungry. sorry, i just had to spoil the entire solemn mood. maybe that's our purpose of life on earth, to eat. to taste, to feel, to savour. to LIVE.

HEH, juline i think you're infected by the outdoor spirit. now you know why i love expeditions so much. XD

JOIN ODAC LAH. SUPER FUN. WE DO EVERYTHING YOU MENTIONED AND MORE.

AND YOU GET TO GO ON EXPEDITIONS AT LEAST 4 TIMES A YEAR.

AND YOU GET TO MEET ALL THE OTHER WONDERFUL ODACIANS. YEPYEP.

oh and our food rocks. to me at least.

speaking of which, i'm going for june ex from next monday to next sat. so don't miss me too much! heh. =) nah...i know you will.

oh yeah. siqian! see you at CIP camp tmw. =D i think it'll be quite fun with the dirty games. i'm short of clothing though. =/ i need at least 8 sets now lah. =/

i agree!! we should have a camp or sth. it'll be damn fun. seriously. maybe in dec hols? =)=)=)

heyy mel, welcome back to spankingly superb and stupendously smashing Singapore!
sigh back to more 'serious' stuff, talking about my ccal camp experience. weeell, see, i'm suffering from camp-sickness, totally miss camplife, except for the freakin toilets and terrible food ( HORRORS!! a big sin to cook trash like that!! ).

i miss the people in my group. i miss the night sky where the number of stars is just amazing. i miss the free and easy life where there are no worries of work and other crap. i miss the sense of surviving without life's luxuries. i miss sleeping in the outdoors. i miss sitting down on the fine soft sand. i miss talking cock with my groupmates. i miss cooking my own food which wasn't of high standard but was extremely fun. i miss working together as a group to overcome challenges. I MISS CAMPLIFE.

hehe, i think that this kind of escape from the real world was really a breath of fresh air and a moment for me to hide away from everything else. like obs. sheesh, it is a really precious and fragile experience, the kind where you shouldn't get too much, if not you'll lose the essence and the meaning...

i hope the GLC can get to go on one of these camps, or at least to some resort la, knowing high-class pple like ah meng and hongyi. can really get to LIVE LIFE without any freaking worries.

sigh, but life goes on. you can't delude yourself or escape from reality. have to face up to the truth and come back to the REAL WORLD. makes one ponder what life really means and its purpose. oh no, this is the path to insanity, better not think too much....

Thursday, June 01, 2006

HEY! mel here. =) back in the sunny island of singapore. i love singapore btw. hahaha i don't think i've took any pics of food leh. =/ lemme check...ooh i have! lets see my significant contribution to GLC.

errrmmm. ok that used to be a plate of char kuay teow until it met me. =) it's SUPER YUMMY. omg seriously, it's the best i've tasted.

WHERE TO GET THIS AWESOME CHAR KUAY TEOW= go to KLCC in kuala lumpur. 4th floor (i think...beside royal sporting house) there's a restaurant called 'authentic penang food' or sth. then you order the house's special seafood char kuay teow. it takes 20 mins to make one plate but it's worth the wait. really. XD

oh and this is a mud pie bought from secret recipe in KL. do u know..the mud pie there only costs RM5.30?!?! and here it costs $4.50. o.O all committee members of GLC should just move there to live. hahaha.

right. end of post. good night!
